How to book a campervan rental in the USA
Trying to figure out which company to rent a campervan through can be a daunting task.
We’ve done it 5 times now, so we know how overwhelming it can be the first time.
Our go-to place to find the best campervan rentals in a particular destination is Motorhome Republic. This is an aggregate (kind of like what Booking.com is for hotels or what Discover Cars is for car rentals) that rounds up all the options in one place so you can easily compare them.
We really like using their filters because you can input the number of travelers, other important features like “automatic transmission”, and amenities like a toilet or shower.
Additionally, you can choose to display options within a price range or filter by highest reviews, making it a really handy and user-friendly tool.
Best Campervan Rentals in the USA
Now that you know exactly what you are looking for in a campervan rental, we’re going to go over the best rental companies from across the United States. We’ve tried to include a variety of price points as well as rental companies from each region.
Psst! If you’re headed to a certain region and want more specific recommendations, check out our other campervan rental guides for specific US cities:
→ Campervan rentals in Portland
→ Campervan rentals in Seattle
→ Campervan rentals in Salt Lake City
→ Campervan rentals in Hawaii
1. Escape Campervans
- At a glance: Basic, budget-friendly vans with lots of pick-up/drop-off locations
- Rental locations: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Denver, New York
- Price: Starting at $25/day during off-season specials
As the largest and most reputable campervan rental company in the United States, Escape Campervans is our #1 recommendation for those traveling on a budget.
They offer a variety of different models from pop-top Jeep campers to the 5-sleeper “Big Sur”, which is a Ford T-350 van. Each unique vehicle is hand-painted by artists in LA, so you’ll be sure to stand out anywhere you go and get lots of epic photos.
Campervan rentals can be as low as $25/day during the low season on seasonal specials, but vary in price depending on the model you choose, the length of your trip and the pick-up and drop-off locations.
All Escape campervan rentals include a refrigerator, sink and stove, plus a solar energy system with dual battery. Bedding, camping gear and kitchen extras are available for an extra cost.
BONUS: We’ve partnered with Escape to give you an exclusive 10% discount when you use this link to reserve your campervan.
Pros:
- Unique and fun designs painted on each campervan
- Available in several locations across the US and Canada (more than any other rental company on this list!)
- Different layouts available
- With so many locations, you could pick up your campervan in one city and drop it off in another, which isn’t possible with all rental companies
- 24/7 roadside assistance
- Reliable international company
- One of the most affordable rental options available
Cons:
- You will not be able to stand up in these vans
- No self-contained options available (aka no toilets)
- Depending on your personality, the loud design on the exterior of the vehicle may be a drawback
- The builds themselves are quite basic and don’t have the frills of some of the more expensive “boutique” options
2. Outdoorsy
- At a glance: “The Airbnb of campervan rentals” has a huge variety of styles, price points and locations
- USA Rental Locations: All over the United States!
- Price: All budgets — from very affordable to luxe!
This platform is essentially the Airbnb of campervan rentals. People who own campervans, RVs or tow-behind trailers can list them on Outdoorsy for rent.
BONUS! We have an exclusive discount code for you. Enter the code TWOWANDERINGSOLES to get $50 off your first campervan rental!
This means that even if you don’t live in an area with lots of rental companies to choose from (like California), you can likely find a campervan for rent without having to take a plane to get there.
Additionally, the variety of campervans and other rental options is vast (like RV rentals) — giving you lots to choose from.
The downside to this, of course, is that you should keep in mind that just like Airbnbs, not all listings are maintained, cleaned or represented in the same way. We are big on reading reviews so we have a realistic idea of what to expect.
Also, it’s good to point out that just like Airbnb, the fees charged for cleaning, extras and security deposits tend to vary a bit. So be sure you have a good understanding of all costs before booking.
Pros:
- Available all over the US
- There is a wide variety of campervans to choose from
- Plenty of different options for different budgets
Cons:
- Extra fees for service and cleaning
- Not all listings are as accurate as you’d hope (check reviews!)
- No option for drop off in a different location (unless you arrange this with the owner directly)
- Since you’ll be dealing with van owners instead of a company, your customer service experience can be varied
Psst! If you’re interested in an RV rental in general and aren’t married to the idea of a campervan, Cruise America is the #1 rv rental company in the US. They have rentals all across the country for a range of budgets and even offer one-way rentals.
3. Travellers Autobarn
- At a glance: High-top campervan rental options at an affordable price
- USA Rental Locations: San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles
- Price: Starting at $89/day (includes unlimited miles) during off-season
This Australia-based company launched fleets of vans in 3 American cities in 2019. We saw Travellers Autobarn vans all over New Zealand and love that they offer high-top vehicles at an affordable price — something that’s honestly pretty difficult to find.
Having a campervan with a high roof allows you to stand up inside, making things like cooking and getting dressed a heck of a lot easier (trust us!).
Plus, Travellers Autobarn has 3 models to choose from:
- Kuga: built out in 2018 or 2019, this newer model is kitted out with solar panels, meaning your lights and fridge will last longer the Hitop has a fit-out of 2013 to 2015
- Hitop: built between 2013 – 2015, these models may have a bit of wear and tear and they don’t have the fancy solar feature, but they’ll save you a bit of money
- Minivan: This is a regular minivan, but it’s equipped with kitchen gear, making it perfect for road trips. But even better, you can rent kits of sleeping equipment like an air mattress and sleeping bag (for just $45) or a kit of camping gear (again just $45), making this a great option for someone who wants to tent camp but doesn’t have their own gear.
Pros:
- You can stand up inside these vehicles (they have an internal height of 6’5”!)
- Free unlimited miles
- Comes with a microwave for easy cooking, as well as a gas cooker
- Can seat and sleep up to 3 adults
- Option to book now and pay later
- Rentals are available for people 21 years old+
- 20% discount when you book for more than 14 days
- Great reviews
Cons:
- Closed on Sundays for drop-off
- Only locations are in the western USA

Tips for renting a campervan in the USA
Before you make a booking, we’ve got some essential tips and things to think about renting a campervan in the USA…
Know what “extras” your campervan comes with
This depends greatly on which company you rent from. However, here are a few campervan essentials to keep in mind:
- Bed & Bedding
- Sink with running water (and a tank you can fill with freshwater)
- Stove & Propane
- Cookware and utensils
- Cooler and/or refrigerator
- Coffee maker (definitely an essential in our book!)
Depending on the campervan rental company, these amenities can be very basic or quite luxurious. Also, some companies have the option to add extras, which are typically charged separately. This can include:
- Camp chairs and/or table
- Awning
- Solar-heated outdoor shower
- Portable toilet
- GPS system
- Equipment rack (for bikes, surfboards, etc.)
- Roof tent for additional sleeping space
What else should you pack?
We’ve put together the ultimate packing list of campervan gear essentials to make sure you bring everything you need to get the most out of your trip. We even created this handy PDF downloadable checklist so you don’t forget anything. And it’s totally FREE!
Be prepared for the worst parts of vanlife…
If you’ve never traveled in a campervan before, we’d highly recommend reading this article where we spill the worst parts of vanlife.
We don’t want to scare you away — we still think you’ll love traveling in a campervan! — but we do want you to be prepared for the good, the bad and the ugly.
Start planning your road trip
Once you’ve picked your campervan rental, it’s time to start getting your route planned out. Lucky for you we’ve got hacks for planning your road trip that’ll make your life so much easier!
Good to know: Be sure you fully understand how many miles you can put on your campervan before planning your road trip.
Some companies are very generous, and offer unlimited miles, while others (oftentimes independent renters on Outdoorsy) have a limited number of miles before you’re charged a fee.
Know where you can camp
Just because you can sleep in your van doesn’t mean you can park anywhere you want. Use our free camping guide to find out how we find the best free camping spots across the USA.
Insider Tip: Download our favorite camping app, The Dyrt, so you can find nearby campsites and read through reviews before you head into the wilderness. Use this link to get access to the Pro Membership for 30 days completely free.
Determine whether you’ll need a National Park Pass
Are you planning to visit some national parks on your road trip? Good for you!
We’ve written a guide to figuring out whether an America the Beautiful Pass will be worthwhile for your trip. Check it out!
Insider Tip: State Parks and National Forests are incredible too, and typically have fewer crowds and inexpensive campgrounds.
Thinking about building your own campervan conversion?
Amazing! If so, our advice is to try to rent one that is similar to what you plan to build so you can get firsthand experience and make tweaks to your design.
Outdoorsy is a great place to start your search since they have the most variety in designs and locations.
Then, when you’re ready to start thinking about your build, come back to our website because we quite literally have everything you need to know about building a campervan!

Hi, Thanks for the overview! We decided to book our trip with a campervan from Travellers Autobarn because of this! Hey Jannick! Great choice with Travellers Autobarn! Thank you for bringing this to my attention, the Dyrt actually ended that promotion in 2021 so there is no longer a discount on Travellers Autobarn. I have updated the article to represent that.
