How I spent 24 hours in Monsanto: Portugal’s Best Hidden Gem

Monsanto, Portugal is one of the most unique and unforgettable villages in Europe I have ever visited, making it an unmissable stop on any Portugal road trip itinerary.

Monsanto Castle at sunset in Portugal

Perched high on a granite hilltop, the village of Monsanto is one of Portugal’s most magical hidden gems, yet somehow, it still flies under the radar.

With houses built into giant boulders, winding stone lanes, and sweeping views in every direction, it already feels like stepping into another world.

But visit at sunset, and Monsanto becomes truly unforgettable. This was my favorite part of traveling here.

Exploring the boulder-studded paths at dusk, climbing up to the fortress, and watching the colors fade into night was one of our favorite experiences in Portugal. It was so peaceful, surreal, and absolutely worth the detour.

If you’re looking for a place that feels both ancient and otherworldly, Monsanto might just be the highlight of your trip.

Our experience in Monsanto

Sunset at Miradouro do Forno in Monsanto, Portugal

We felt like Monsanto was unlike any other place in Portugal and completely removed from the modern world. The cobblestone streets are steep and winding, the village is tiny, and life here moves slowly. Charming is the word I keep coming back to.

We spent our evening wandering up toward the castle at golden hour and honestly it might have been one of the most peaceful moments of our entire trip 3 week trip to Portugal.

There are barely any restaurants or shops, which forces you to slow down and just be present. We brought our own food for dinner and sat outside our accommodation to watch the sun go down.

We really enjoyed spending the night in Monsanto as opposed to just doing a day trip. The magic of Monsanto really comes alive in the evening and early morning hours, and waking up in that little rock village is something so special.

Monsanto, Portugal Guide

How to spend 24 hours in Monsanto

This itinerary is set up so that you arrive in the afternoon on Day 1 and leave in the afternoon on Day 2, giving you a full 24 hours in Monsanto.

That said, you can always adjust this schedule to fit the time that you have there.

Day 1

  1. Check in
  2. Dinner
  3. Walking route
  4. Castle sunset

Day 2

  1. Breakfast
  2. City gate
  3. Church & tower view

Day 1: Monsanto Castle & sunset

Arrive in Monsanto in the afternoon, check into your accommodation, and explore the village at golden hour.

1. Stay in a unique rock house

Unique rock house Monsanto Portugal accommodation

We 100% recommend staying at the Old House in Monsanto.

This rock house is even better than the pictures and staying here is an experience in itself. I’d say this is half of the reason we loved our time in Monsanto so much!

It was a highlight of our entire trip to Portugal, so we’d highly recommend booking this spot. It is so unique and the photos don’t do it justice.

If you want to stay here, be sure to book early since there aren’t many other accommodation options in town.

The owner, Eloisa, doesn’t speak much English, but we didn’t have a problem as she is very kind and you can communicate through Google Translate.

Good to know: We had to park outside the actual town and walk to our accommodation. If you stay at the accommodation we recommend, the owner will arrange to meet you and she will take your luggage in her small vehicle.

2. Have dinner (or pack a picnic!)

We made a charcuterie board and enjoyed it on our terrace with wine (or you could pack it to go and we’ll share a great picnic spot!)

Alternative: If you’d prefer to go out to dinner, the best place in town is Monsanto Café e Bistro. They are closed Mondays & Tuesdays. Our Airbnb host said she could make us a reservation if we wanted.

3. Wander Monsanto during golden hour

Exploring the town at golden hour is the most magical thing about staying in Monsanto, so don’t miss this. Wander aimlessly, or copy our route below so you don’t miss any of the iconic spots (there are a lot!).

These are most of the views around town and the castle in the order that makes the most sense to see them (lower elevation to higher elevation).

The 2 main places to focus your time are the Miradouro do Forno and along the walls of the Castle of Monsanto.

Walking route & views

Abandoned Boulder Chapel Monsanto Portugal
  1. Gruta: cave/shelter (quick stop)
  2. Miradouro do Forno: most beautiful viewpoint overlooking town (there are a couple of picnic tables here if you’d like to bring food). If you don’t eat your dinner at your accommodation, this is the spot I would choose to have a picnic; Tip: look for the iconic boulder restaurant called Petiscos & Granitos
  3. Abandoned boulder chapel: along the pathway uphill
  4. Furdas: ancient pig pen (in early summer it had tons of flies, so watch out!)

4. Watch the sunset at Monsanto Castle

Monsanto Castle Portugal

Castle of Monsanto: This is arguably the most picturesque spot in the area, so be sure to dedicate enough time here. You can sit on the castle walls and watch the sunset. Be here at least 30-60 minutes before sunset.

Cisterna: cistern & chapel inside the castle grounds

Vértice Geodésico Monsanto (763 m): Climb the castle walls and view down on Monsanto. This is one of the highest points of the castle ruins.

More views near the castle if you have time:

  1. Viewpoint just before the castle
  2. Capela de São João (ruínas) old chapel ruins, still standing there is a single arch made of rocks. This was a “House of Dragons” filming location.
  3. Penedos Juntos Boulder viewpoint

Day 2: Monsanto city gate & church (depart midday)

Wake up in your rock house and have breakfast. If you stay at our recommended spot, Eloisa will bring you a small breakfast for the morning. But the day before, we packed some yogurt because we didn’t know what to expect.

Last views: City gate & church

  1. Portas de Santo António: city gate, downhill from the city center (meaning you have to climb back up)
  2. Igreja da Misericórdia: church and tower view

Tips for visiting Monsanto

Here are our top tips and things to know about visiting Monsanto to make the most out of your stay.

Spend the night.

While you could visit Monsanto as a day trip, we’d highly recommend spending the night for a few reasons:

  1. Evening is the best time to explore
  2. The temperature is a lot more comfortable in the evening and morning
  3. You’ll see very few other tourists
  4. Our Airbnb was one of the highlights of our trip!

Book your accommodations early.

There aren’t many places to stay in Monsanto, so we recommend you book this portion of your trip as early as possible. We cannot say enough about the Old House in Monsanto

Bring your own food.

There are very few options for food (we recommend bringing your own); the places that said they were open on Google Maps were not, so err on the side of not being able to eat out.

What to get: We recommend getting the fixings for a charcuterie board, breakfast items, snacks, and wine.

You can’t drive in the town.

Good to know: You will need to park outside the actual town and walk to your accommodation. If you stay at the accommodation we recommend, the owner will arrange to meet you and she will take your luggage in her small vehicle.

Wear comfortable shoes.

Since there are no cars in town, you’ll be walking a lot. We would recommend wearing your most comfortable pair of shoes. Monsanto has lots of cobblestone streets and is quite hilly in spots, so be prepared for this.

It gets hot here.

This area gets hotter than other parts of the country, and midday can get up to 90+ degrees F in the summer. Come prepared with appropriate clothing, sun protection, and an insulated water bottle to stay hydrated.

We recommend exploring in the evening, as temperatures are more comfortable (and the sunsets here are mind-blowing!).

Where to eat in Monsanto

Cherry pastel de nata
Cherry pastel de nata
  • Monsanto Café e Bistro: best place in town to eat (closed Mondays and Tuesdays)
  • Petiscos & Granitos: iconic boulder restaurant
  • Taverna Lusitana: grab a coffee and enjoy on the terrace
    • Optional: try a cherry pastel de nata (this area is known for cherries); we had one and honestly weren’t very impressed, but it may have been that it wasn’t very fresh.

Where to stay in Monsanto

Accommodations are very limited in this remote town so it is best to book early or be flexible with your dates.

Old House Airbnb (our top pick!)

Monsanto Airbnb Portugal boulder

This is where we personally stayed and it was a highlight of our entire trip to Portugal!

This rock house is hands-down one of the most unique Airbnbs we’ve ever seen. Staying here is an experience in itself, and photos don’t even do it justice.

The owner, Eloisa, doesn’t speak much English, but she is very kind and you can communicate through Google Translate.

Alternative options:

Best time to visit Monsanto

Katie walking a path at Monsanto Castle in Portugal
Walking up to the Monsanto Castle

We visited Monsanto in late May and felt it was the perfect time to visit.

Keep in mind that during midday hours, the town gets very hot and hard to walk around.

Because of that, the best time to visit Monsanto is in the shoulder seasons like April – June and September – October.

Summer time is the peak tourist season in Portugal and Monsanto would get extremely hot, even in the evenings.

The winter season would be nice with cooler temperatures, but most stores and restaurants will be closed for the season.
