Italy itinerary FAQs

We carefully constructed our perfect Italy itineraries for anyone who has roughly 10 to 20 days to spend in Italy and wants to see some of the classic sights as well as some little-known gems. Either of our Italy itineraries would make an amazing honeymoon or special trip (especially when combined!).

The hotels, experiences and restaurants recommended are for those with a mid-range budget.

While Italy can be an expensive country, we’ve done our best to keep costs reasonable. That said, these aren’t itineraries for budget travelers.

Each destination in our Italy itineraries has 3 accommodation options to choose from. We’ve included a mix of Airbnbs and hotels to cover various accommodation preferences.

Nope! We set up our Italy itineraries based on train (and sometimes ferry) travel around Italy. In our experience, taking the trains in Italy is both affordable and efficient!

That being said, if you prefer to have your own vehicle, you could absolutely follow either itinerary by self-driving. Just know the timing may change a bit due to traffic and road conditions.

We’ve included a number of hikes and outdoor adventures in our Italy itineraries. Plus there is a decent amount of walking involved to explore the destinations around Italy.

That being said, we think anyone with a moderate level of fitness should be able to enjoy either itinerary, and you can always swap out of a hike for another less strenuous activity if you’re not feeling up for it.

In theory you could do either itinerary during any time of year*. However in the colder winter months, some of the hiking and outdoor activities may not be as enjoyable (or open!).

We’d suggest following either our Classic Italy itinerary or our Amalfi Coast itinerary during the spring, summer or fall months (April – October).

You can find more information in our guide to the best time to visit Italy

*Keep in mind most of the Amalfi Coast shuts down and the ferries stop running from November – March.
