Classic Italy Itinerary
Overview
This itinerary includes detailed plans for each of these iconic destinations (+ plenty of hidden gems!) and is customizable based on your interests & travel style.
Day 1
Arrive in Rome & settle in. This is a flexible day with plenty of free time and suggestions for exploring.
Day 2
Get acquainted with Rome through history, see some of the top attractions and have an unforgettable lunch.
Day 3
Take the train to Cinque Terre and experience an incredible sunset view.
Day 4
Hike part or all of the Blue Trail between the villages of Cinque Terre and maybe stop for a swim.
Day 5
Take the train to Florence and experience yet another iconic sunset view.
Day 6
Start your day with Michelangelo’s The David, tantalize your taste buds on a food tour, and experience Il Duomo from inside and out.
Day 7
Take on the remaining sights of Florence, and round out the night with an unforgettable meal.
Day 8
Catch the train to Venice and see the iconic sights around St. Mark’s Square.
Day 9
Experience a gondola ride on the Grand Canal and take in the view from the Ponte dell’Accademia.
Day 10
Say fare well to Venice and get ready to depart Italy.

This is the perfect route for first-time Italy travelers who want to see the iconic sights and destinations throughout the country.
This itinerary is for you if you:

- have a mid-range budget to explore Italy
If you’ve been to Italy before, or you’re just looking for a different type of trip, you might be more interested in our Amalfi Coast itinerary, which can also be combined with this itinerary for one epic trip.
What is the budget?
The accommodation, experiences, and activities recommended are for those with a mid-range budget.
We’ve done our best to keep costs reasonable.
We’ve included a handful of (optional-but-worthy) splurges, but have mostly stuck with mid-range prices.
What type of accommodation is recommended?
Each night of this itinerary has 2-3 accommodation options to choose from. We’ve included a mix of Airbnbs and hotels to give you options depending on your preferences.
Do I need a car to follow this itinerary?
Nope! We set up this itinerary based on train travel around Italy. In our experience, taking the trains in Italy is both affordable and efficient!
That being said, if you prefer to have your own vehicle, you could absolutely follow our itinerary by self-driving. Just know the timing may change a bit due to traffic and road conditions.
How much physical activity does this itinerary require?
We’ve included the Blue Trail Cinque Terre hike in our Italy itinerary. Plus there is a decent amount of walking involved to explore the destinations around Italy.
That being said, we think anyone with a moderate level of fitness should be able to enjoy our classic Italy itinerary, and you can always swap out the hike for another less strenuous activity if you’re not feeling up for it.
What time of year can I follow this itinerary?
In theory you could do this itinerary during any time of year. However in the colder winter months, some of the hiking and outdoor activities may not be as enjoyable (or open!).
We’d suggest following either our Classic Italy itinerary during the spring, summer or fall months (April – October).
