FAQs
This is a perfect road trip route for anyone who has roughly 2 weeks in Iceland and wants to see the top sights around Ring Road as well as some little-known gems. This would make an amazing honeymoon or special trip.
This itinerary is for you if you:
- love scenic road trips and a sense of freedom
- want a mix of bucket list spots and off-the-beaten-path gems
- enjoy hiking, outdoor adventures, and jaw-dropping landscapes
- prefer traveling independently (not on a tour)
- like having flexibility, but also appreciate a well-thought-out plan
- want to drive Iceland’s iconic Ring Road without feeling rushed
The accommodation, experiences, and activities recommended are for those with a mid-range budget.
While Iceland is a notoriously expensive country, we’ve done our best to keep costs reasonable. That said, this isn’t an itinerary for budget travelers.
We’ve included a handful of (optional) worthy splurges, but have mostly stuck with mid-range prices. Traveling by campervan and cooking your own meals is a great way to keep costs down when exploring Iceland.
Each night of this itinerary has our recommended campsites that will accommodate a campervan (or tent camping). We’ve also included some recommended hotels and guesthouses for each night in case you choose not to camp.
Not exactly, but it’s highly recommended.
You could do this itinerary in a rental car and choose to stay in hotels and airbnbs along the way, or tent camp.
However, in order to keep costs down, we recommend having a campervan and cooking some of your own meals along the way.
This itinerary was created as a road trip, and therefore you will need your own vehicle.
You DO NOT need a 4×4 for this itinerary as the entire Ring Road is paved and accessible to all vehicles. There are some areas we recommend on this itinerary that you will need to drive on a gravel road, but we’ve done this exact itinerary in a 2WD campervan and had no problems.
Being such a nature-centric destination, we think it’s best explored by getting out of your campervan (or car) and hitting the trails!
The itinerary includes various easy to moderate level hikes, but nothing too demanding or requiring extra gear.
Most people with average mobility and fitness should be able to enjoy the hiking and physical activity in this itinerary. Plus you can always adjust and skip activities that aren’t as appealing to you.
We’d only recommend this itinerary for those traveling during the summer months (June-September), as many places will be closed outside this season.
Additionally, outside of the summer months, you won’t have enough hours of daylight to do as much exploring (meaning you’d arrive at many spots in the dark).
If you only have one week and want to see some of Iceland’s best sights, we’ve got the perfect South Coast road trip for you.
If you really can’t make 14 days work, you could either cut out the 2 days in Reykavik at the start of the itinerary or skip the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and go straight to the Glymur hike on Day 11 (which also saves you 2 days).
We’re so confident you’ll love this itinerary that we’ve kept it incredibly affordable at just $27. With our track record of helping thousands of travelers plan unforgettable trips, we stand behind every page.
